BRISTOL — A city resident who was treasurer of a statewide tax collectors group was charged with first-degree larceny Monday after an investigation showed she stole more than $50,000 from the organization, police said.

Debra Guerrette, 55, was in custody on $25,000 bail early Monday pending her appearance in Superior Court.

According to police, a representative of the group, the Connecticut Tax Collectors Association, Inc., contacted police in June and said the association suspected Guerrette of embezzlement.

An analysis showed that Guerrette had put more than $50,000 from the organization into her personal account without permission. The embezzlement started in 2008 and continued for five years, police said.
